New York: Anchor, 1989. Thirty-First Printing; Paperback. ISBN: 0385014856. B&W Map; 8.10 X 5.20 X 1 inches; 346 pages; Soft cover has black spine with orange and blue lettering. A delightful, well-written, and vastly informative ethnographic study, this is an account of Fernea's two-year stay in a tiny rural village in Iraq. To help her anthropologist husband gather data, she agreed to dress only in the all-enveloping black veils of the women of the harem. Although she shared a small mud-brick cottage with her husband, her daily life was spent only with the women of the town, for in this polygamous society there existed no social communications between the sexes. Includes a 'cast of characters' and a glossary; index.. Very Good+ .
